North Korea yesterday conducted a 'successful'
hydrogen bomb test, Pyongyang has confirmed.
The detonation of the thermonuclear weapon
triggered a 5.1 magnitude earthquake when it
exploded at 10am local time at the Punggye-ri test
site in the north east of the country, the tremors of
which were felt many miles away.
Its ignition ends weeks of speculation that leader Kim
Jong-Un had developed such a weapon, which is
lighter yet even more powerful than the fission blast
generated by nuclear bombs containing uranium or
plutonium alone.
'The republic's first hydrogen bomb test has been
successfully performed at 10am on January 6,
2016, based on the strategic determination of the
Workers' Party,' a state television news reader
announced five-and-a-half hours after the blast.
Reading a typically propaganda-heavy statement,
the anchor confirmed that a 'miniaturised' hydrogen
bomb had been detonated in an operation that was
deemed a 'perfect success'.
She added that in doing so, North Korea 'joined the
rank of advanced nuclear states' and had elevated
their 'nuclear might to the next level', providing a
weapon to defend against the United States - who
they claim to have 'numerous and humongous
nuclear weapons' - and its other enemies.
The broadcast concluded by saying: 'If there is no
invasion on our sovereignty we will not use nuclear
weapon. This H-bomb test brings us to a higher
level of nuclear power.'
The successful detonation marks a major step in
North Korea's nuclear development and is bound to
cause considerable anxiety to neighbouring
countries.
Last month, Kim Jong-Un had suggested
Pyongyang had already developed a hydrogen bomb
- although the claim was greeted with scepticism by
international experts.

Tyga, through his rep, responded to claims that he
tried to hit on a 14 year old girl. He said he only
contacted 14-year-old model, Molly O'Malia
because of her musical talent after his team
became interested in signing her as a singer.
According to TMZ:
Tyga's manager Anthony Martini tells TMZ the
rapper reached out to 14-year-old Molly O'Malia
after his team found out she had a pretty strong
musical following online and thought she might
be a candidate for a Last Kings Records
project ... his record label. Tyga claims it was
strictly business and completely PG. As for her
age -- according to text messages obtained by
TMZ ... Molly mentions she is 17.
The manager says in the back and forth Tyga
specifically asked her to send him some music,
adding things never got "uncomfortable" as she
claimed. The rep says Tyga wanted to
FaceTime Molly to talk business and see her
sing ... as he sat in the studio with his
producers.

Chairman of ThisDay newspapers and president of
Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria
(NPAN) Nduka Obaigbena has written to EFCC on
allegations he received part of the controversial
arms deal money. In a letter yesterday, Obaigbena
said his company and NPAN didn’t know that the
N670million compensation they got from the office
of the National Security Adviser were from arms
purchase fund. Obaigbena disclosed this in his
reaction to EFCC on the payments his company and
the 12 other newspapers received from the NSA in
2015. In a letter sent to EFCC, Obaigbena said;
"When the ONSA (Office of the National
Security Adviser) said that they had approval to
pay us, but would rather not set a precedent by
paying THISDAY directly, we nominated a
member company of the THISDAY Newspapers
Group, called General Hydrocarbons Ltd., to
receive the payments on behalf of the group of
companies, given that the assets of General
Hydrocarbons Ltd – mainly generators – were
also destroyed in the bombings;
“We did ask our insurance consortium to pay
compensation but they said we were not
covered for war and or terrorism risk. Until that
time, we never knew we needed war or
terrorism insurance in Nigeria as the
government had not officially declared war.
With the power of hindsight, we now know
better.
“We simply used the compensation funds to
defray some 30 per cent of the N1.7 billion we
already paid to 3rd party printers for services in
lieu of the Abuja press, while we went to our
banks for refinancing printing presses,
computer-to-plate and other facilities.”
"We never participated in any arms purchase in
any shape or form and only demanded
compensation for a horrendous terrorist act
against us. In the same way, the United
Nations and others who may have received
some compensation could not have known the
line budget items for the funds being used for
the reconstruction of the UN Abuja buildings.
Even the Nigerian Guild of Editors, which may
have received donations for their secretariat
from the ONSA, could not have known which
subhead it was paid from. We simply cannot
know or be expected to speculate which line
item the spending was made from by the
ONSA. There is simply no nexus between
payments made for compensation, to us
victims of terrorism as well as to newspapers
in compensation for an unprovoked attack on
free speech, and any arms purchase budget'
We do not deserve further trauma because
some official(s), outside of our control, may or
may not have followed due process. All victims
of terrorist attack deserve a fair and just
compensation. The fact that we have received
some remedy should be reason to accelerate
compensation for all victims of Boko Haram
attacks across Nigeria however big or small,”
he said.
Lagos state government says it has concluded
plans to install 10,000 CCTC cameras across the
state. The state Commissioner for Economic
Planning and Budget, Akinyemi Ashade, stated this
while giving a breakdown of the 2016 budget,
tagged ’The Peoples’ Budget’ before newsmen.
“We will be expanding our ICT infrastructure
statewide. Consequently, a budget of N9.6
billion has been approved for this purpose in
2016. This will include a Smart City project
targeted at deploying technology to enhance
security in the state.
It will also aid our revenue generating efforts.
We will be increasing coverage of CCTV
installations in the state. Our goal is to have
over 10,000 active cameras, connected by
Broadband. The existing 1,000 cameras will be
reactivated and these will be increased by an
additional 3,000 cameras after the completion
of the first phase of this project.”he said
We are proud of what we have achieved over
the years. The Headies stage has birthed the
careers of many artistes who are of A-list
status today. We are also glad that we have
reinstated pride and prestige into the winning
of a locally organised music awards and, we
have celebrated artistic ingenuity for 10 straight
years; a feat no other group before us was able
to achieve.

materials released in the year in review and screen

comes out with a final list. The voting categories,
such as 'Song Of The Year', 'Artist Of The Year', &
'Next-Rated' are left strictly for fans to vote and
choose the winners. We wish to say categorically
that we do not tamper with the outcome of the
voting process. The limit of our involvement in this
voting process is to advice the nominees to engage
their fans and solicit for their votes. We do not
accept any responsibility for failure on the part of
the nominees or their record label, when they fail to
do this.
Unfortunately, most times, Voting, Year In Review
and Definitions Of Each Category, are generally
taken for granted by many artists. We can also
attest to, and hereby state categorically that, there
is no evidence that any of the artistes aggrieved
and vocal about their displeasure to the turnout of
the award, voted in the 'Next-Rated' category, as our
voting process captures email addresses and phone
numbers.
We have ensured that the awards happened
regardless of sponsorship, and that it gets better
with each passing year, without giving excuses
about challenges. We may not have gotten
everything 100% right, but integrity has been our
watch-word. The 109 Nigerian artistes that have
won can attest to the fact that they did nothing
different from those that have not. Awards by
nature, are and will always remain, controversial
except every nominee gets one.
We try to ensure that winners are within reach
before announcing their category, as the whole
essence of celebrating talents will be defeated
without that.
While it is not out of place for an artiste or a party
to vent their disapproval, we strongly condemn all
kinds of improper conduct and the use of profanity
on live television. In the same manner, we condemn
provocative comments. In all, we see no use or
reason for a disgruntled artiste or party to destroy
valuable properties put in place to give them extra
comfort before they perform or come on stage. This
is totally unacceptable and will be addressed.
We congratulate all nominees and winners of The
Headies 2015 and wish them a more successful
2016.

The Lagos State government on Sunday
sealed the main electrical and electronic market in
Oshodi.
Officials of the Lagos State Taskforce on
Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement)
Unit on Sunday morning stormed the market to shut
it.
It was gathered that as early as 6 am, hundreds of
armed policemen stormed the market and shut it
down.
Several police vans were stationed around the
market to scare away traders.
Most of the traders had gone to the East to
celebrate the Christmas and New Year festivals.
The market was shut following information that
traders in the market had decided to stage a
protest in support of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of
Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is being
detained by the Department of State Security
Services (DSS).
Before the closure, it was gathered traders were
planning to organise a rally to protest the continued
detention of Kanu.
Similar protests were organised by traders at the
popular Alaba International Market before the
Christmas holiday.
An official of the task force who pleaded anonymity,
however, said they were at the market to seal it due
to the traders nonchalant attitude to environmental
sanitation.
He noted that the traders have taken government’s
threat lightly and did nothing to remedy the
situation.
Most of the traders, however, disagreed with the
government position.
They noted that they have always abide with
environmental laws.
They wondered why government had to shut the
market when most of the traders had gone to the
East to celebrate the Christmas and New Year
holidays.
Taraba State government has confirmed the
outbreak of Lassa fever, a deadly viral disease, in
the state. Lassa fever is transmitted by infected
rodents. The state Commissioner of Health,
Innocent Vakkai in an interview with journalists over
the weekend said;
"One person died and two others quarantined
and their blood samples have already been
taken to Irrua Specialists Hospital in Edo State
for further confirmation."
Speaking on how the viral disease is contacted,
Vakkai said
"People usually get infected with the Lassa
Virus after exposure to infected rodents, while
person to person transmission occurs through
direct contact with the sick person."
He said precautionary measures include putting
food in rodent proof containers and wearing
protections such as masks, gloves, gowns among
others.
People can be so funny. Someone stole Abraham Lincoln’s hand. The crime
had no witnesses. There are no suspects. The
police are not even certain when the hand
disappeared.
About all anyone knows is that a plaster sculpture
of the 16th president’s hand, proudly displayed for
years at the Kankakee County Museum, has been
missing from its shelf since at least Dec. 11.
Any art theft would be jarring in Kankakee, a
working-class city about an hour’s drive south of
Chicago, but because of its connection to Lincoln,
the loss of this sculpture has touched a nerve there.
Museum officials had thought that the theft might
have been a prank, and that the plaster study would
resurface in a few days. The police hoped someone
might provide information about the theft after
seeing a Facebook post by the department, which
included photographs and described the hand as
roughly “the size of a 8-10 pound ham.”
The local newspaper, The Daily Journal, published
an editorial pleading for the thief to come forward.
“We are blessed to have such a fine museum
with an impressive inventory,” the editorial
said, “but the collection is not complete
without Lincoln’s hands.”
The hand was the work of George Grey Barnard, a
sculptor who spent part of his boyhood in Kankakee
around the time that Lincoln was assassinated, and
whose admiration of Lincoln was a recurring theme
in his art. The sculpture was displayed along with
other renderings of Lincoln in a wing of the county
historical museum built specifically to showcase
Mr. Barnard’s work.
Connie Licon, the museum’s executive director, said
the hand sculpture had been on display since at
least 1991. This was the first art theft she said she
could remember in more than 20 years at the
museum.
“We were devastated. It just brought us all to
the floor,” said Ms. Licon, who was alerted to
the theft by a custodian who noticed the vacant
spot on the shelf. “We’re a small museum, and
we just don’t acquire pieces like this.”
The police report estimated its worth at $5,000, but
described the artwork as “invaluable.”
“There’s almost no way to put a value on
something like that because there’s no
market,” said Jack Klasey, a longtime museum
volunteer and local historian.
The theft occurred at the beginning of the
museum’s busiest month. In December, groups of
schoolchildren and others streamed through the
museum — past the Barnard sculptures, tributes to
local sports heroes and artifacts honoring three
Kankakee County natives who served as Illinois
governor — to admire Christmas trees decorated by
civic groups.
In addition to being outraged, museum visitors were
perplexed. “I think it’s kind of crazy,” said Kelly
Lambert, a college student whose aunt works at the
museum. “Why would someone want to walk off
with a fake Abraham Lincoln hand?”
